One feature I appreciated in the macOS app was the ability to combine custom connection settings with shortcuts to specific apps or websites. I find this especially useful for streaming or using apps where I might want a faster connection. With split tunneling, you can choose which apps use the VPN to access the internet.

However, one thing I missed in macOS and iOS that the Windows and Android apps offer is split tunneling. Most of NordVPN's features are common to all four apps. Regardless of the platform, I found navigating through the settings to be intuitive and straightforward. Settings and Features: The settings menu in each NordVPN app is easy to locate, either on the left side in the desktop apps or at the top via a settings icon in the mobile apps. I consider this a must-have feature because it saves time and hassle. As with many VPNs in our rating, NordVPN lets you mark servers that you use often as favorites for faster access. Note that the default server it selects may not actually be the fastest for you, so it's best to test several nearby servers.įor consistency, I used a server in New York to test all the VPNs in our rating, including NordVPN. I don't find this absolutely necessary, although it can make file sharing somewhat faster.Ī "quick connect" feature connects you to what NordVPN thinks is the fastest server without having to scroll through the server list or the world map. I also could filter through to select a server that's optimized for P2P file sharing. Alternatively, I could scroll when using the desktop apps or drag when on mobile apps through the world map and click on a server in a particular country. Primary Controls: In each NordVPN app, I found it easiest to connect to a server by choosing one from a list of countries and cities. That said, NordVPN does have a world map showing where all of its roughly 5,500 servers are located, which I found adds visual interest. Users who find it too bland may prefer a more friendly-looking interface such as TunnelBear's. Look and Feel: No matter which app you use, NordVPN's dashboard is quite plain with a black or white color scheme - a design I think makes it easier to use.
All of the apps installed correctly within minutes and were ready to use after I entered my previously selected username and password. I downloaded and installed NordVPN's apps for Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS quickly and without incident. Here are my impressions from using the service.
